What Are The Three Most Common Styles Of Patio Doors?

Patio doors have been a popular feature among homeowners for several years. They are appreciated for the extra light they bring into a home, the increase in visibility of outdoor scenery and the stylish charm they add to the exterior of a home.

Patio doors are available in a variety of different shapes and sizes. However, they are usually divided into three basic categories. These are sliding patio doors, swinging patio doors and folding patio doors. These are some of the different features that each style has to offer.

Sliding Patio Doors

Sliding patio doors are also sometimes referred to as gliding doors or bypass doors. Sliding patio doors are made of at least two full panels of glass and one of those slides easily to open and close.

Some sliding patio doors also have a screen so that air can flow through when the sliding panel is open without the worry of insects also coming into the home. These doors are easy to maintain, can be wiped clean inside and out and also have a built-in lock for added security.

Swinging Patio Doors

Swinging patio doors are also known as hinged patio doors because they have hinges that allow them to open and close in the same manner as a standard exterior door. Single swinging patio doors are commonly made of a solid glass panel that may be trimmed with wooden panels all around the sides.

Swinging patio doors are also available in a double door style. These doors are often called French doors. French doors are hinged on one side and meet and latch together on the other side when the doors are closed. French doors may be made of a combination of glass and wood in a variety of different designs.

Folding Patio Doors

A folding patio door system has a door that folds up like an accordion. This gives the homeowner more control over how much or how little light comes into the home when the door is opened.

The folding patio door is on a special track that allows it to fold back away from the doorway. The door can fold partially or fully depending on the preference of the homeowner. Most folding patio door systems have several folding panels so that a small or large opening can be created.

Patio doors (such as those from Fas Windows and Doors) are also available in a variety of different materials. These include fiberglass, wood, vinyl, aluminum, and steel. Some have glass panels and some do not. Choosing the best one for your home depends on the style you prefer and the durability you need.
